Where did this stuff come from?

Bear in mind ... this website hasn't been significantly maintained in years, so everything below is vintage 1995 or so ... don't take it as a current recommendation. The best of many years ago (like Louis Armstrong and much of Dover Clip Art) is still great, but the best of yesterday's software is largely old junk today. I still use Dreamweaver, but could it just incorporate Flickr Uploadr and play nice with WordPress...

Music

What's that music playing in the background on my home page? It's a clip from the great Louis Armstrong and His Orchestra, playing "Rhythm Saved The World." The album I took it from is in the Priceless Jazz series. You can get it online:
[cdnow.com] Select Title search, and search for priceless jazz
[amazon.com] Select Popular Music search, and search for louis armstrong priceless jazz

Illustrations

The coffee cup and other diner graphics on my home page are from the Dover Clip Art Series, Menu and Restaurant Illustrations by Leslie Cabarga. That same hand holding up that same covered dish is also featured on the awning of a defunct cafe South of Market. Seen it?

The mystery fowl on one of the test pages was scanned in from a graphic on a freebie calendar I got at a library conference once. The color and animation I added later.

I did the animations in GIF Animator from the Microsoft web site. It used to be possible to download it for free, but now Microsoft seems to have decided to include it as part of a product for sale. However, there are several sample animations you can download from Microsoft.

Fonts

The "Welcome" at the top of my home page is in Diner Script, from the Expert Software CD Fonts! CD. This CD has 1500 fonts on it for under 15 bucks! How can a fontophile resist? My other favorite source of great fonts at great prices is Bitstream. I've used their fonts extensively in my printed documents but I don't think I have any of their fonts in my web pages ... yet.

Photos

The pictures in the photo gallery are all pictures I took, as best I can remember. If any of my friends and/or family and/or erstwhile traveling companions remembers snapping the shutter on any of these, drop me a line and I'll correct the credit!

I scanned the photos on a Umax scanner and then ran them through Adobe Photoshop for cropping, color correction, and other futzing around. Then I sent them through Adobe ImageReady to reduce file size. (The ones with large areas of blue sky seemed to be the ones ImageReady could do little with. Apparently the size reduction works best when there are lots of smaller areas of different colors next to each other.)

Everything else

For coding my pages I use WordPad and Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Most things you encounter in my pages should be pretty well identified as to source, if the source is other than myself. If you have any questions about anything in my pages, feel free to write me at asta@sirius.com.
