Did you know most monitors come with the wrong brightness and contrast settings?

Here are the 4 steps to set your PC monitor to show you the best possible color.

1. Turn the "Contrast" or "Picture" up as far as you can turn it and still be able to read this.

2. Now turn the "Brightness" or "Black Level" down until the two boxes on the left below are both black.

3. Now turn the Brightness up until you can barely see a letter B in the middle box above.

4. Now turn the Contrast down if the bright white is hurting your eyes!

If you have a Windows PC and the above instructions didn't work, please tell me. Also, tell me: Did other web pages you usually visit look better with your new adjustments? or worse? Email asta@sirius.com.

If you have a Mac or a Unix workstation, the above instructions above should work for you, but maybe they don't. Let me know! Email asta@sirius.com.

Important: The above is a new diagnostic that I constructed, based on (a) the teachings of Charles Poynton at a BayCHI tutorial, and (b) what worked on my monitor.

For more information on black level, picture, gamma, and other topics in digital and analog video, as well as typography and design, see Charles Poynton's site.
